Special-Lite manufactures engineered architectural products, which includes commercial entrance systems, interior aluminum (Type II) framing with swing or sliding aluminum framed doors, and FRP restroom partitions. Our interior and exterior complete entrance system products are fiberglass or aluminum flush doors with many door face texture options including wood grain, aluminum monumental (stile & rail) doors, fiberglass and aluminum framing. Our engineered, made to order architectural products are used in new construction and renovation projects for educational, commercial, institutional, industrial and municipal applications. The company was founded in 1971 and pioneered the use of fiberglass reinforced polyester (FRP) material for door skins in the early 1980's, and today is the largest volume producer of commercial FRP doors in the United States. 

Basic Functions: This position will be assisting in researching, designing, and developing new Special-Lite products, altering existing product designs to meet evolving or new code requirements, and supporting manufacturing with new processes, equipment and fixturing. This person will be expected to design, build prototypes, fixtures, produce drawings and documentation, controls and processes associated with Engineering. This position will entail a great deal of hands on work. This candidate should be familiar with writing test plans, technical specifications, project proposals, and document and release product designs and instructions. Knowledge and experience in architectural testing is a plus. Utilizing a strong mechanical aptitude, the successful candidate will actively participate in cross-functional team settings collaborating with Special-Lite engineering, manufacturing, purchasing, and external suppliers. This person will work independently on a given project and/or with other teams during the development process. The successful candidate will be assigned projects based on the urgency, which could be research and development, product development, and/or manufacturing related.

Responsibility & Primary Duties:

  • Comply with the mission statement set forth by Special-Lite, Inc.
  • Seek to develop high-quality new products to a specification set forth by Special-Lite.
  • Must be capable of managing and generating incoming /outgoing correspondence.
  • Will be required to evaluate and order equipment and supplies as appropriate for each assignment.
  • Will work from engineering schematics and/or specifications.]
  • Will use precision measuring equipment.
  • Will need to be capable of maintaining information utilizing a database format.
  • From time to time, require extended hours and schedule flexibility.
  • Must be capable of some large and small hands-on assembly work

Required Qualifications:

  • Four (4) year engineering degree from an accredited institution and a minimum of 3 years of proven experience.
  • Must be able to manage projects from conception to completion.
  • Must be able to develop a project budget
  • Excellent communication skills; both written and oral
  • Must have strong CAD, AutoCAD, Inventor and Vault Skills. 
  • Exceptional math skills.
  • Blueprint/schematic reading skills.
  • Must have excellent computer skills and familiar with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of GD&T.
  • Ability to achieve competence in the operation of shop equipment for prototype purposes.
  • Advanced problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to design using AutoCAD, Inventor, or equivalent.
  • Ability to travel for business up to a week at a time (4-6 times per year). 
  • Required to undergo a background check and a drug screen.
  • Must have the ability to lift, push, pull and/or move up to 50-pounds. 

Desired Knowledge and Experience:

  • Experience with doors, entrance systems, interior architectural products, and architectural hardware.
  • Extrusion design experience.
